The type of birds most frequently involved in bird strikes are large birds with big populations, particularly geese and gulls. Throughout North America Canada Geese and migratory Snow Geese populations have risen significantly while feral Canada Geese and Greylag Geese have increased in parts of Europe increasing the risk of these large birds to aircraft.   In other parts of the world, large birds of prey such as Gyps vultures and Milvus kites are often involved.

The birds identified as the most damaging are:  Turkey Vultures, followed closely by Canada geese.

In terms of frequency, bird strikes occur most commonly with Mourning Doves and Horned Larks.

The time of the year where most strikes occur tends to be during the spring and fall migrations.
